Ability to adapt, adventure and organization are the three key concepts for an On The Road travel.
We learned how to improve already after the first experience. We understood that is was fundamental to put everything on a single rucksack, that two t-shirts were enough and that the Stelvio Pass was too much for our Vespa! :P

Itinerario viaggio in vespa 2011

For a travel like that the planning is necessary. The things that will require you more time will be the choice of the route. In order to have an exciting journey it is preferable to choose places which reflects your tastes and your personality. Once you have chosen the main destination, you will have to construct the whole trip around it.
For example, our last main destinations were: Garda Lake, L’Aquila and the “5 Terre”.

Because of our 125 cc, we avoided to do in a single day more than 250 km and 2000 mt of difference in height. In fact, also on an adventure trip it is good to know the limits of your vehicle, to avoid excesses and challenge your luck.
In short, you need the right amount of attention and adventure. J

We use ViaMichelin to plan each stop (but also Google maps is fine), and in this way you can check the distance to cover and the travel time. You can also choose among the most economic route, the fastest or the prettiest.

Obviously, once the travel is started, it is good to use a detailed map.
It is better not to use a navigator or other electronic devices, because they will certainly ruin the magic of this On The Road travel. Our preferred method is always the asktowhoeveryoumeet… you will hear some good ones!! Also because the locals can give you the best advices.

Another thing to be considered is which days are the best to travel. We tried to avoid the days with a lot of traffic and also to make some stays coincide with festivals and feasts (you will drink and eat in joy with a little spending!).

Now I want to talk about one of the best present I gave Him: “Guida ai Camping in Italia” (Guide to campings in Italy – it is better to choose the last edition). In this book you can look for all the campings in Italy, organized for provinces. Try to choose functional campings with good panoramas. When you travel a lot on a saddle it is important to rest on the grass and to chat quietly.
We have never spent more than 15 euros for a stay, and in camping we made a lot of friends!

Well yes, we carried our little home with us in all our journeys. We chose an igloo for three people (remember always to choose a tent with at least one or two extra spots) with a good defense against water and wind, and during the last days we were able to pitch it in five minutes!!
Choose a tent that when closed will take a little room and which is not too heavy. We secured it to the front rack with some elastic cords.
Talking about rucksacks, everything depends on the number of days you intend to stay out. We used one with a capacity of 60 lt, and another one for the documents, the map and all the other things you need to have within arm’s reach.
It is useful also to have compressible sleeping bags; we kept them in the travelling case on the back rack.

We used instead the underseat storage to contain the maintenance kit for the Vespa.

Parsimoniousness: as you may have understood one of our goals was to demonstrate that you can go on solida for more than ten days with only 200 euros. For this reason we cooked our meal everyday (our mess tin was providential for that), we preferred campings to hotels and we chose carefully were to do the refueling.

The weather is another aspects that needs to be considered carefully, because, especially in the mountains, the weather can change in a sudden with big changes in temperatures; for example one day we passed from 30° C and a sunny day to an hailstorm difficult to forget… also for this reason it will be fundamental to have always everything you need to cope with the changes in weather! Finally, you need to remember that with bad weather you need to drive more carefully than in normal circumstances!

The fundamental difference between a travel on a motorbike and one in a car is that you can really feel part of the nature, feeling on your skin all the changes of temperatures… besides, you can appreciate hairpin bends, bends and all the parts of the panoramas more than you would do sitting in a cabin…
In a travel like that is the route which is important, the road and not the destination, and I think this is one thing we are losing the most in the era of technology and speed.
It is fine at least once in a year to be free without timetables and deadlines, and to have the possibility of stopping, taking some pictures and leaving again whenever you want without worries.

Colazione

Montaggio tenda

5 terre
Break

The agility forest park

Carpi

Buon Viaggio! :)
